Larkin. 1.5'x4' acrylic on canvas.
Larkin was born out of a childhood love of hockey, and more precisely, the Detroit Red Wings. Being raised by a single father I had no choice but to become a fan, and now I embrace it with every ounce of my being. While making this painting I got to obsess over the little things. The ice surface, the sheen off the leather of a skate, the texture of a glove. It allowed me to ritualize my obsession in more ways than usual. Larkin is an homage to those things in our life that we follow religiously for no other reason than love. For me, it is the chance to get away from the trials of the modern day. It's not a job, it isn't self care, it isn't a chore. For some it may be reading, for others it's their favourite band. For me it's hockey. It is something we do purely for ourselves and our love of something that we've been cultured to cherish. Go Wings Go!
